College Scholarship Application Process
BNCA restricts college scholarship funding to applicants who reside in one of the following communities:
 
Amesbury, Beverly, Danvers, Essex, Gloucester, Hamilton, Ipswich, Lynn, Lynnfield, Manchester-by-the-Sea, Marblehead, Middleton, Nahant, Newbury, Newburyport, Peabody, Rockport, Salem, Salisbury, Saugus, Swampscott, Topsfield, Wenham, West Newbury.
 
One applicant will be selected for each scholarship category from a competitive application process. BNCA will notify applicants about award decisions. These are one-time, non-renewable $3,500 scholarships.
 

The scholarship awards will be presented at a special reception on May 5, 2022 at Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers.The scholarship award recipients are strongly urged to attend but if school engagements interfere they may not be required to attend to receive scholarship, In order to secure the scholarship payment, scholarship recipients must submit written documentation from the college/university to BNCA indicating that the recipients are actively enrolled for the Fall 2022 semester.

IMPORTANT
The following documents are required at the time of submission of the online application. Please have these documents in your possession before commencing this online application as you will not be able to save a partially completed application. Documents that must be sent directly must be emailed to scholarships@bostonnorthcancer.org. Partial applications will not be considered.
 
I. Resume: Please attach a resume at the end of this application that includes extra-curricular and volunteer activities and employment history. Please include dates of participation, company names, positions held, and leadership roles where appropriate.
 
II. Essay Questions: Please answer the following questions in three pages or less.
 
1. How has cancer played a role in your life and in your goals for the future?
 
2. Who or what inspired you to pursue a college degree? 
If you have declared your major, please indicate who or what inspired your choice of major as well.
 
III. References: Please include two typed and signed letters of recommendation
Please note: References from friends or family members will not be considered.
 
IV. Official Signed Copy of High School Transcript: Please include with the online application. If necessary for high school to send directly please email to scholarships@bostonnorthcancer.org.
 
V. Physician Letter: Please include a signed letter from your physician on official letterhead verifying that you qualify for this scholarship with a past or present cancer diagnosis for yourself or parent. Include with the online application.
 
 
The submission of a scholarship application shall constitute the applicant’s authorization to Boston North Cancer Association, Inc. to use the applicant’s personal information and photographs for the purpose of promoting the association.

The Teri Hall Memorial Scholarship -

Awarded annually to a college-bound north of Boston high school senior who has a parent currently undergoing treatment for cancer, survived cancer treatment, or passed away from cancer OR who themselves is a cancer survivor or undergoing treatment for cancer. The Teri Hall Memorial Scholarship is funded by donations from Teri's family and friends.



Teri Hall
Theresa "Teri" Hall of Lynnfield, passed away after a 14 year battle with cancer. Teri's life was characterized by an unparalleled grace and courage as she faced the many challenges of cancer. She will be remembered by all who met her for her strong faith and unconditional love for her family and friends. With her infectious laugh, boundless compassion, and radiant smile, she instantly charmed all those who had the pleasure to know her. Teri was a cherished member of our board of directors and she will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved her through this scholarship.

Herbert H. Leventhal, MD.
Herbert H. Leventhal, MD

Herbert H. Leventhal, MD Honorary Scholarship
Awarded annually to a college-bound north of Boston high school senior whose parent either passed away from cancer, survived cancer during the applicant’s childhood years, or is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, and has an interest in pursuing a career in medicine. This scholarship is awarded in honor of Herbert H. Leventhal, MD. 

Herbert H. Leventhal, MD
Herbert H. Leventhal, MD was past president and long serving member of the Boston North Cancer Association’s Board of Directors. This scholarship honors his more than 49 years of dedicated and compassionate care for patients with cancer. A resident of Swampscott, Dr. Leventhal, now retired, treated patients at Lahey Medical Center, Peabody, MA and Lynn Hospital, Lynn, MA. He is a graduate of Harvard College and Tufts University School of Medicine and is a board-certified Radiologist, Radiation Oncologist.

David J. Solimine, Sr.
David J. Solimine, Sr.

The David J. Solimine, Sr. Honorary Scholarship
Awarded annually to a college-bound  north of Boston high school senior or a current enrolled college student who is a cancer survivor or undergoing treatment for cancer. 
In order for the college student to be eligible the applicant must be enrolled in classes for the fall of 2025.

David J. Solimine Sr. is the Founder and Director of Solimine Funeral Homes. Mr. Solimine is deeply committed to the health and well-being of North Shore residents. A lifelong Lynn resident, Dave takes pride in his deep community roots. A dedicated and tireless community leader, Dave is a past president and long serving member of Boston North Cancer Association’s Board of Directors.

The Mary Barbuzzi Breast Cancer Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to a college-bound north of Boston high school senior whose parent is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer, survived breast cancer treatment, or passed away from breast cancer.


Mary Barbuzzi
The late Mary Barbuzzi was a member of the Boston North Cancer Association’s Board of Directors for over ten years. Born in Lynn, Mary was a resident of Swampscott most of her life. A known leader in home care, Mary was a successful businesswoman who developed Freedom Home Care into a top private home care agency on the North Shore.

The Hope Begins Here Scholarship

Awarded annually to a college-bound north of Boston high school senior whose parent either passed away from cancer, survived cancer during the applicant's childhood years, or is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. This scholarship is awarded in honor of the annual recipient of the Boston North Cancer Association's Hope Begins Here Award.

Bargoot Medical School Scholarship Application

Bargoot Scholarship Application Process
 
BNCA restricts medical school scholarship funding to applicants who resided in Essex County, MA during their secondary school years.
 
One applicant will be selected from a competitive application process. BNCA will notify applicants about award decision. This is a one-time, non-renewable $7,500 scholarship.
 
The scholarship awards will be presented at a special reception on May 5, 2022 at Danversport Yacht Club in Danvers. The scholarship award recipients are strongly urged to attend but if school engagements interfere they may not be required to attend to receive scholarship, In order to secure the scholarship payment, scholarship recipients must submit written documentation from the college/university to BNCA indicating that the recipients are actively enrolled for the Fall 2022 semester.

The F. John Bargoot, MD Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to a medical school student who resided in Essex County, MA during their high school years and has a demonstrated interest in cancer treatment and prevention.

F. John Bargoot, MD
The late F. John Bargoot, MD was past president and long serving member of the Boston North Cancer Association’s Board of Directors. A resident of Swampscott, MA for 40 years, Dr. Bargoot dedicated his entire career to the treatment and prevention of cancer. He served as the Director of the Division of Radiation Therapy for Atlanticare Medical Center in Lynn, MA from 1973-1993, and as a Radiation Oncologist at Lahey Clinic for 10 years.
