A Great Story
How the Grant is Being Used
The grant funds Equine-Assisted Experiences (EAE) one-day retreats for cancer survivors using the power of horses to remind survivors of their own strength. The retreats are open to men and women who have, or had, a cancer diagnosis. Professional facilitators at each Equine Encounter use the special relationship between people and horses to help people build a renewed sense of self, increase confidence, regain trust, and learn to feel the support offered by truly wonderful horses.

“BNCA support made it possible for us to host an all-day retreat at our newly renovated retreat center to support our Equine Assisted Therapy programming for individuals healing from cancer. Thanks to your generous $5,000 award, we were able to engage cancer survivors through a day-long retreat based on innovative, evidence-based equine-assisted therapy programming. The retreat provided participants with camaraderie, community, and transformative healing through the human-horse connection. Pat of Lowell attended one of the first retreats at Ironstone Farm. In fact, when Pat, a breast and lung cancer survivor, came to her retreat, she was afraid of horses. She attended the equine encounter based on the recommendation of her Lowell General support group advisor.
“It was 1,000 times more than I ever expected. I had no clue it would be so wonderful. I felt so clear about myself and my health. I didn’t want to leave. By the end, it was a whole experience that I could never have imagined- more support and love than I’ve ever received in my life- because you went through a whole process.”
